Purpose of this steggles.info site
Our aims are
- to provide genealogical information for those
researching the Steggles (and variants)
surname. The name 'Steggles' is used from now meaning
'Steggles and variants'.
- to encourage the deposition of diverse information in our
archives about individuals, so that family historians will be
able to build up a picture of the struggles, successes,
tragedies, migratory pathways, education, contribution to their
communities and many other aspects of their lives.
Limitations
- Only individuals who used the Steggles name during their
lifetimes are included. To include maternal descendants, where
new surnames occur, would make the site unwieldy. Perhaps those
who are interested in other surnames could start their own
information sites, and we could create an index of such links.
- No records of living or those with reference to living
individuals will appear on the website. Contributors may deposit
information about living people in the archive, so that at the
appropriate time it will be entered into the indexes and
available for others.
- Information on this site should be regarded as a guide, and
the accuracy cannot be relied on. It is suggested researchers
view the original documents wherever possible. Transcription of
information is fraught with problems, such as illegibility,
fading or other degradation of originals, where some inspired
(and some not so inspired) guesswork has been used by the
recorder.
- Information about origins of the surname, geographical
distribution, and the Steggles (and variants) DNA project are to
be found on the following website:
www.stagles.co.uk.
- A genealogical discussion group and other information is
available on www.steggles.com.
- As this site develops it is proposed that a discussion forum
will be set up to exchange views about the site, and contents.
Until then please email ideas to Ray Steggles at

Indexes and records
This is the beginning of a never-ending process, where indexes
and extracts of information will be recorded. Below are the areas
where coverage has already started and others which may be added.
Copies of original documents
It is proposed that an archive of copies of original documents be
set up, and an index of these be available on this website. On
request, a copy may be emailed to enquirers. For such an archive to
succeed we need a broad range of deposited documents, and with this
in mind, I suggest that depositing three items, such as copies of
birth/ marriage/death certificates, wills, or photographs would
allow up to ten copies to be requested. In this way a small number
of deposits by a large number of people will provide a broad base of
valuable information, rather than a lot of information about
well-researched individuals by a few.
